Chilli crab is a Singaporean classic, yet there is always something different about the sauce at every restaurant. At Penang Seafood Restaurant, their chilli crab sauce is packed with flavours. It’s eggy, sweet, and tangy. You would certainly be licking your fingers clean after finishing the crab!

Different from the usual black pepper crab, the white pepper crab available here is a dish that you shouldn’t miss. Whipped up using top grade white pepper from Sarawak, the sauce packs a punch, delivering piquant, peppery, and strong garlic flavours while not masking the sweetness of the crabmeat.

Other than the obvious crab dishes that you must try, go all out and dive into the other tantalising dishes on the menu!

A dish that would impress everyone at the table is the Volcano Chicken ($58), where the chicken is “set on fire” right in front of your eyes. Before the spectacle, the chicken is baked till golden brown in a charcoal oven, giving it its smoky profile. Afterwards, hot oil is poured over the chicken many times, ensuring its crispiness on the outside yet still maintaining the tenderness inside. Kaoliang liquor is then drizzled over, before the chicken goes up in flames.

Another interesting item would be the Drunken Sauna Live Prawns (Market Price). Freshly caught from the display tanks outside, these giant tiger prawns are presented in a wooden bucket and cooked using hot stones, just like in a sauna. Wow your friends and family as they open the cover of the wooden bucket, and the steam escapes, with herbal fragrances wafting through the air. It is difficult to go wrong with these succulent prawns which carry a tinge of herbal flavour from the herbs that they have been cooked with.

In Singapore, Char Kway Teow is often known to be a little sweet, and it is characteristic of it to be dark coloured. However, Penang Char Kway Teow ($8, $12, $16) is different as it is more savoury than sweet, and thin, flat noodles are used instead. The wok hei hits the spot, leaving you wanting more after each mouthful.

One of the recommended dishes is undoubtedly a bowl of Penang Assam Laksa ($8). To make the soup as flavourful as it is, the fish broth is painstakingly simmered for a minimum of 4 hours. Coupled with fresh vegetables such as cucumber, onions, red chillies, pineapple, lettuce, common mint and pink bunga kantan (ginger buds), the spicy, sour, and refreshing broth is really tasty. The spice from the laksa leaves a little tingling sensation on your lips, and the broth is so addictive, it is difficult to stop.

What really won my heart was the Hand-made Prawn Rolls ($15, $22.50, $30). One bite and all the flavours in the roll explodes in your mouth. From the crispiness of the skin to the juiciness of the prawn bits, everything drives you to go in for another bite. The water chestnuts in the roll also complemented the filling, giving it a crunch and light sweetness.
