March 28, 2017
Have you ever wanted to dance with fairies, ride a unicorn, swim with mermaids, or simply chase rainbows? Well, here’s your chance as we’re bringing you 7 rainbow-themed foods to brighten up your day! Sometimes, all we need is a little splash of colours in our lives! Perhaps, it’s time to bring back the Rainbow food trend?
Rainbow Cheese Toastie
Previously located at Robertson Quay, Epicurious cafe has shifted to their new home at UE Square. How about starting your day with their Rainbow Cheese Toastie ($9)? It’s a sandwich made of grilled cheese and truffle oil, coloured with natural foods. Vegetable purees such as beetroot (pink), carrot (orange), spinach (green), butterfly pea flower (blue), and red cabbage (violet) are used to create this rainbow toast.

Rainbow Burger
If you think rainbow designs are only reserved for desserts, you are mistaken. Word Bistro is serving their attractive instagram-worthy Handsome Burg ($20), which consists of bacon, onion, kale, and a thick succulent beef patty slathered with house-made spicy peanut butter sauce. This savoury delight is a comfort food, and the vibrant colours immediately puts you in a good mood.

Rainbow Jelly Heart
Akin to colourful layers of agar-agar, this multi-layered rainbow “cake” (from $47) is made up of 4 tiers. The base contains digestive biscuit crumbs that are diet-friendly due to its low calorie count. The 2nd tier consists of full cream cheese, a great source of calcium and protein, while the 3rd tier is made up of colourful jelly. Finally, it’s topped with fresh strawberries which have antioxidant properties. Good for our health!

Rainbow Cake
Opened at a hipster area, Haji Lane, I AM Cafe has the tallest Rainbow Cake ($8.90) you’ll ever find in Singapore. It’s too tall to stand alone, hence it’s served laid flat on a long plate. If you’re one who likes a dense cake, this is for you. But, I personally prefer a light and fluffier cake.

Rainbow Latte
Last year, a Las Vegas-based barista Mason Salisbury surprised some of his customers by pouring a regular looking latte or cappuccino that suddenly ends with a flourish of foamy color. The technicolor beverages resemble the patterns from tie dye t-shirts and are fully edible. So, I AM Cafe tried to replicate the Rainbow Latte ($5). Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out like what we expected. We were kind of disappointed with the so-called latte art.

Rainbow Chiffon Cake
Let the attractive colours of this rainbow chiffon cake lift your mood up! Good news! You can get it affordably at $6.90 per cake – perhaps the cheapest rainbow dessert in Singapore. There’s a strong coconut fragrance and the cake tasted lighter and fluffier than expected. Our only complaint is the soggy bottommost layer of chiffon.

Rainbow Paddle-Pop Cheesecake
This Halal-certified Western café conveniently situated at Woodlands Swimming Complex evokes a sense of nostalgia, with their Rainbow Paddle-Pop Cheesecake ($8.80). It made us miss the paddle-pop ice cream we used to love in our childhood days. This cake is really creamy but not too heavy, boasting a tinge of sweetness and slight tangy-ness.
