Restaurant Ah Koong – Fish Ball Noodle Specialist in Malaysia
November 25, 2012
Because Baby Xiao Ke is living in JB, Malaysia, we went into JB early in the morning for breakfast. One of my Malaysian friends brought us to Restaurant Ah Koong (亚坤纯正西刀鱼丸) for breakfast.
Friend L: Maureen, you ate Ya Kun before?
Me: Of course eat before lah, Ya Kun Kaya Toast so famous! Singapore already have Ya Kun, why go Malaysia still eat Ya Kun?
It was then I realized it wasn’t the Ya Kun kaya toast I thought. It was the Ya Kun fish ball noodle in Malaysia! We visited the Taman Sentosa outlet, and was surprised how busy the restaurant was at 7am on a Saturday morning. Obviously it is popular, at least at this outlet! Ah Koong claims to be famous in Singapore. Frankly, I have never heard of it but I do see many photos of local actors visiting the restaurant.
Started in a small shop in 1987, Ah Koong has now expanded to a capacity of over hundred of workers, five restaurants outlets and a manufacturing factory.
Their selling point? Fish balls! Their special made pure fish balls contain no preservative and is delicious. They also serve yong tau foo, fish soup and porridge, fresh oyster soup, abalone soup, laksa etc.
You have to order from the counter at the front of the shop, pick your noodles from the tray of finely-chopped noodles and grab your favourite pieces of yong tau foo.
My breakfast is a splendid spread of black noodles with fried fish cakes and a bowl of yong tau foo. The noodles was a delicious affair, topped with chopped spring onions. The fishballs here have enough bounce and is not fishy at all.
The best dish I had at Ah Koong is their deep fried fish cakes! The fish cake is very tasty and springy – crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. We enjoyed it so much that we ordered two more fishcakes to share.
