It’s always a busy sight at Rosy and Nora because the queue never stops. Here’s why: their Roti John and extremely affordable burgers, starting from as low as $1.50, are simply irresistible.

There are two queues at the stall, the one on the right for ordering and the other on the left, for collection. Look out for their menu on the side as you have to be clear and decisive when it’s your turn to order. Things move quickly here!

With many people sharing how sedap their Kentang Ball ($4) and Roti John ($4) are, I had to try it too! On top of that, I had the Popiah Basah ($1) and Popiah Goreng ($1).

First up, the widely raved Roti John. When I saw one of the makciks preparing my roti john, I was really excited. The baguettes on the large grill were sizzling away till they were charred.

The thin spread on the roti john consists of minced mutton, chopped onions, and egg. The baguette was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were not super generous with the spread but I thought it was just the right amount as it didn’t leave me feeling jelak at the end of the meal.

The roti john is served with a sweet chilli sauce on the side instead of the usual mayonnaise and chilli or tomato sauce. I prefer to have my roti john this way – I can add on the amount of chilli sauce I want instead of having the entire dish drenched in mayonnaise and chilli. Overall, it was quite shiok and very filling.

The highlight for me was the Kentang Ball. I was not expecting such a huge ball but it was a nice surprise. What’s more, there were also huge chunks of stewed beef in it! Together with chopped onions, egg floss and deep-fried shallots, the kentang ball was a real treat.

The kentang was mashed up and stuffed with minced meat before being shaped into a ball to be deep-fried which made the outer layer crumply. However, it was not super hard or crispy and I could still dig into the kentang very easily.

I love how the soup had a strong pepper aftertaste. That peppery flavour intensifies as you drink more of the soup. If you love spice, this would be rather addictive for you because of the gradual build-up of the burning sensation in your mouth.

I was really looking forward to the popiah but I don’t think I would order it again. Both the basah (original/wet) and the goreng (fried) were too dry for me.

The basah version was a little sad as it’s not filled with much turnip and carrots. I felt like I was only eating the popiah skin, especially at the ends of the popiah. The goreng version, on the other hand, was difficult to bite into as the fried skin was cold and tough.

As their popiah is made beforehand and stacked in heaps at the counter, it probably was already pretty stale when I visited in the evening. They won’t heat it up before serving so perhaps a better time to try the popiah would be around 2-3 pm when the stall starts its day.

All in all, if you’re looking for a good Roti John to satisfy your cravings, do drop by Rosy and Nora for it! I would be back to try the burgers if I’m in the area because they looked so good!
