Royal J’s Premium Taste – New Outlet in Bishan Serves Fried Porridge & Many New Exciting Dishes

I am sure many of us remembered Royal J for its signature fried porridge. Started from a hawker stall in Macpherson, they have then opened their first zichar stall in Foch Road. Recently, they have opened a new air-conditioned restaurant in Bishan and Chef John have introduced a series of new dishes!

Signature Kampong Chicken ($18 for small) was the highlight of our lunch. Only available during weekends, the poached chicken was soft and tender. The fried garlic sprinkled on top makes a great condiment, I think I am going to make this for my dinner next time.

We wanted to try the Baked Claypot Rice with Unagi but unfortunately, it was not available on that day. So the waitress recommended us to try Special lemon fish with bee hoon ($26). Steamed whole, the kaffir lime and lime juice combination works as an appetizing tangy broth. While I like it that the vermicelli soaks up the flavours from the broth, I felt it was hard to decipher between the noodles and the fish bones.

The Yin and Yang Tofu ($12) was nothing out of ordinary. It comes with steamed egg and a flavourful sauce.

Not forgetting the signature Fried Porridge ($8 small) where the rice was literally “fry” with an abundance of savoury ingredients: yam cubes, pork lard fritters, dried cuttlefish, dried shrimps, chives and shredded crab. Using superior broth, Japanese pearl grains and his homemade brown sauce, this thick porridge is still as good, if not better.
