Nestled within a quiet estate in Hougang, Rui Heng Braised Duck sits in a coffeeshop under a HDB block. They specialize in braised duck rice and kway chap. We were greeted by a queue when we arrived. Rui Heng seemed like the most popular stall there. We ordered enough food for five people (a plate of braised duck, two kway chap platters, four plates of rice and a bowl of kway), and the bill amounted to $37.50.

I always go for the rice first, instead of the duck. Anyone with me? The sight of rice drenched in a gooey brown sauce, always makes me drool. I took my first bite, and boy, was I impressed. The sauce, which was slightly sweet with a herbal hint, complemented the fragrant rice so well.

I then reached for the glistening braised duck meat. It was incredibly tender, but firm at the same time. There was very little fat present, but that’s exactly how I like my duck. I enjoyed the chilli, which was quite spicy.

The kway chap platter comprises braised pork, pig’s skin and intestines, braised egg, fish cake, tau kwa, and tau pok doused with the same sauce. I don’t fancy innards, but I tried a tiny piece. I’m glad the innards were quite clean-tasting. However, I could still taste and smell a subtle odour. My colleagues enjoyed it, though. The tender and flavourful braised pork, and tau pok which soaked up the sauce were really yummy.

Unfortunately, the kway leaves much to be desired. The broth was bland and lacked the herbal taste that I’m used to. The kway was sticky, and too thin, for my liking. I think it’s clear that the rice fared way better.

Their chilli sauces were amazing. The level of heat was perfect for me. If you can’t handle spicy food, go easy on the chilli!
