Seow Choon Hua Restaurant – Handmade Foo Chow Fishball at Beach Road
November 16, 2018
Located in a quiet spot just off Beach Road, Seow Choon Hua is famous for Foochow specialities such as Foo Chow fishballs, red rice wine mee sua and more. I dined here for the first time many years ago when I was working in the vicinity. However, I totally forgot about its existence until recently, when I was watching a TV programme and saw that Seow Choon Huat was featured.
We opted for Foo Chow Mixed Soup ($6 – $10) which comes with Foo Chow fish ball, yen pi, dumpling and fish dumpling. I don’t think there are many stalls that are selling Foo Chow fishballs left in Singapore. Seow Choon Hua Restaurant is probably one of the rare ones. The Foo Chow fishballs here were soft and slightly chewy. Once you bite into it, you’ll be greeted by a ball of juicy minced pork. The yen pi is similar to dumplings as it is filled with minced meat and chestnut. The difference between yen pi and dumpling lies in their skin — yen pi skin is made from hammered pork.
Other than Fuzhou fishball, Seow Choon Hua Restaurant is also known for its lor mee and red wine chicken. Red rice wine is an indispensable item in most Foochow celebrations. It is sweet, full-bodied, and fragrant. But sadly, I find the Red Wine Chicken Mee Sua ($5/$6) here a tad too mild in flavour. As for the Foo Chow Style Lor Mee ($5/$6), it was lighter than the usual lor mee, and each bowl of noodles comes with ngoh hiang, egg, char siew, fish cake and fried dumplings.
The stall has been around for many years, through multiple generations, and the owners are still keeping to the tradition of making their Foo Chow fishballs from scratch. You have to give it a try!
