Japan is known for many things, but their pride and joy has to be the speedy, efficient trains that effortlessly run throughout the country! While travelling to Japan may not be in the cards now, one cafe is determined to bring Japan’s railway experience to Singapore!

Located in 111 Somerset, Shinjuku Kissa Testudo opened their tracks three months ago, serving comforting coffee and desserts to expectant patrons. One of the cafe’s founders, Isaac, mans the train station booth-inspired counter. Similar to the different classes in a train cabin, you have to pay a fee to select a type of seat to enjoy your food at. Get front and center with the cafe’s interactive train dioramas with the Diorama seats ($3.50)! There are other seat options such as Counter seats ($2.83), Tatami seats ($0.60), and Priority seats (free).

There are additional costs for renting the Diorama track and model trains along with the Diorama seats to ensure an immersive train ride right at your fingertips. Rentals of the track start from $15 for 60 minutes, $25 for 120 minutes, and $38 for 180 minutes.

Once you get your seating and order settled, Isaac will pass you a train ticket card to mark the start of your journey! Get ready to be greeted with a cabin-like space once you “step onboard” the cafe. The train handles and large glass protected diorama train set-up will transport you to Japan. The diorama includes iconic Japanese landmarks like the Tokyo tower and Tokyo Skytree.

As I was ordering coffee, Isaac shared they have different beans which they import directly from a Japanese roastery. Choose a cup (out of the twelve designs they have) on the shelf to enjoy the drip coffee from.

As I settled down at the counter seat, I got a bird’s-eye view of the diorama! I ordered their popular Sakura Blend Coffee ($7.00) which had bright floral notes and a medium body. The aroma was strong and captivating.

Next, I had the Shibuya Square ($10) and Shibuya Triangle ($10) to go with the coffee. The Shibuya Square comprises fluffy sponge cake layers, cream, strawberries, and slices of orange. The Shibuya Triangle was significantly richer in taste as compared to the square, which might be overwhelming for some. The cafe offers cute “train forks” to eat the desserts with!

Overall, Shinjuku Kissa Testudo will leave an impression with its unique ambience, strong coffees, and delicious treats. Be sure to make a reservation ahead of time as the seats are limited!
