Sim Lim Square Bak Chor Mee Reopens at Lengkok Bahru
October 26, 2023
If you’re a devoted fan of the well-loved bak chor mee stall that has made Sim Lim Square’s food court its home for 26 years, you will be pleased to know that they are back in action!
Started by the owners’ grandparents, this popular stall has been dishing out delicious bak chor mee over the years, catering to shoppers in Sim Lim Square. Last December, this popular spot had to close because the rent shot up, leaving many loyal customers sad and pining.
Now, they’ve found a new home at Lengkok Bahru, with Papa Tan and his partner at the helm.
What sets this bak chor mee apart is its delightful mishmash of ingredients. The Signature Bak Chor Mee (S$4.90) is a carnival of flavours, featuring ngoh hiang, fishballs, fishcake, fried wantons, pork slices, and mushrooms. While the addition of abalone slice may be a thing of the past, the generous assortment of ingredients more than compensates.
The secret lies in the random combination – it might seem like a rojak, but trust us, the taste is far from chaotic. I like the fried wanton! It is crispy on the outside and bursting with umami from the fresh minced pork and chestnut filling.
The noodles were well-cooked and the sauce at the bottom of the bowl contained a mixture of chilli, black vinegar and soya sauce. When tossed properly, the sauce complements the noodles nicely. Their version is slightly more vinegary that what we are used to, but it still retains a good spice with the chilli sauce incorporated. Similar to other stalls, they serve a bowl of the warm soup with fishballs on the side if you order the dry variant.
