As someone who appreciates strong flavours, the idea of sinful sweets and savage treats (aka savoury mains) is undoubtedly enticing. Sin and Savage Bakehouse promises that and more, which is the motivation behind their name. The one-month-old bakehouse in Queenstown is run by the same folks behind Mixsense Private Dining.

The cosy interior is very simply decorated, and it’s quite the quaint space with only five tables and two counter seats. There’s a large open-kitchen where you can see the bakers in action. You can also pop outside and grab one of their outdoor tables if you’ll like some fresh air.

The sinful side of the menu mostly consists of doughnuts, cakes, tarts, muffins and pastries. Their doughnuts with delectable fillings are especially eye-catching and choices of Speculoos Cookie Butter ($4.50) and Hazelnut Ganache ($4.50) are the very definition of sinful.

If you’re feeling more than a little peckish, there’s quite an extensive menu to look forward to. Expect classic cafe items ranging from appetisers like Bangers & Mash ($11.90) and Cauliflower Steak ($13.90) to brunch items like the Small Boi Breakfast ($18), pasta and mains such as Fish and Chips ($18) and Beef Stew ($19). Beverages include coffee, tea, mocktails and juices.

I started off with the Charcoal Dalgonut ($5) which stood out from the rest of the doughnuts because of its charcoal colour. The sugar-crusted doughnut oozed with a very strong dalgona coffee ganache, which they were certainly very generous with. Unfortunately, any amount of sweetness from the doughnut was thoroughly overwhelmed by the bitter tones from the dense coffee filling.

Among the pasta options available, I was intrigued by the Orecchiette ($19) that uses shell-like pasta known as the “little ears” of the Italian world. Imagine a weird cross between ravioli and spaghetti, but not quite. The pasta is dressed in a tomato-base smoky spiced beef sauce, and accompanied with cherry tomatoes and baby spinach.

What stopped this dish from reaching five stars for me was the pasta itself as some of the shells were stuck together, which resulted in them being quite thick and not being coated evenly in the sauce.

The highlight of today was my choice of dessert — Pistachio Burnt Cheesecake ($12.50). While the taste of pistachio wasn’t evident on the first bite, it gradually got stronger and left a gentle, nutty aftertaste. There wasn’t any obvious ooze from the centre of the cake, but the texture was delightfully creamy and dense.

I decided to skip the coffee this time and went for one of their mocktails, Perky Lychee ($6.90). The scent of lemon teases your sense of smell but there was none of the sourness that came with it. Rather, the bubbly ginger ale was infused with the sweetness of lychee and was a very refreshing beverage to counter the rich tastes of the pasta and bakes.

Sin and Savage is definitely a promising new establishment. They will definitely see a return trip from me for their burnt cheesecake, and other doughnuts!
