Sin Hoe Huat Cafe – Traditional Kaya Toast With a Side of Sous Vide Eggs
January 24, 2021
The cafe empire of Upper Thompson is one of my favourites to spend the afternoon at, but only occasionally during the weekends. I wouldn’t fancy splashing out on brunch on a daily basis (RIP bank account!) but there is this one place I head to whenever I’m in the area and craving a traditional local breakfast — Sin Hoe Huat Cafe.
Ttucked away in the cosy line of stalls in Sembawang Hills Food Centre, this family-run hawker business of over 40 years offers an evolved menu of toasts with spreads of kaya and peanut butter in the traditional style, or on thick cuts of bread. And you can’t call it truly authentic unless you get it in a set complete with soft-boiled eggs and a nice, hot beverage. On days with sweltering weather, I prefer a cold cup of honey lemon ($1.50) or ice lemon tea ($1.30).
You can’t go wrong with the classics so I decided to get the Kaya Thick Toast Set with Teh C ($3). The fluffy bread was nicely toasted and warm on the inside, with a good layer of sweet and fragrant kaya spread on top of it. The Teh C was smooth and sweet, just the way I like it.
The sous vide eggs were cooked perfectly without being too runny or overdone. Add in a spoonful of dark soy sauce and a dash of white pepper and you have a timeless breakfast favourite that’s delicious even when eaten on its own. I like dipping my kaya toast into the eggs — a quirk I picked up from my dad. While some might be scratching their heads at this odd mix of sweet and savoury flavours, I can guarantee that this is quite the delicious pairing.
The Peanut Butter Thick Toast Set with Kopi ($3) was not too bad either. The toast was bit crispier compared to the kaya one, but I’m always a fan of bread no matter what form it takes. I’m also thankful they weren’t too heavy handed with the spread, seeing that the peanut butter was plenty creamy by itself. But I’d leave the toast-in-eggs combination to the kaya instead. My boss isn’t a fan of sweet things so she had the robust Kopi instead.
No matter how much I eat it, I never get sick of it. I’ll always stay true to this old-school style breakfast and there’s no better place to get it than at Sin Hoe Huat Cafe.
