Singapore Food Festival 2020 Goes Online For The Very First Time: Expect Live Masterclasses, Virtual Food Tours and more!
August 14, 2020
This August, forget the word “diet” because the Singapore Food Festival (SFF) is back!
Themed “Rediscover the Foodie in You”, Singapore’s biggest annual food event will take on a virtual format across two weekends in August (21–23 August and 28–30 August). SFF 2020 will come to life in the form of Virtual Food Tours, Live Masterclasses with chef collaborations, Food Bundles and limited-edition SFF food merchandise.
LIVE MASTERCLASSES
Get tips and tricks from renowned chefs and experts through the Live Masterclasses. A total of 17 masterclasses will be held and they are free for viewing!
Get the experience of a lifetime in “The Do-Not-Miss Doughnut” Live Masterclass with Michelin-starred chef Dave Pynt and award-winning pastry chef Teresa Tan as they take you through the process of making the highly sought-after doughnuts from Burnt Ends Bakery. The highlight of the session has to be the special flavour developed just for the Singapore Food Festival and inspired by one of Singapore’s most well-loved drinks – the Milo Dinosaur Doughnut!
Cheryl Koh of Tarte by Cheryl Koh will present éclair-making in the “National Day Mini Eclairs” Live Masterclass. Chef Julien Royer of three Michelin-starred Odette will take you on a local farm tour and show you how to put together one of his most popular salads, PROMENADE À SINGAPOUR, created to showcase farmed-in-Singapore greens during his “In Support of Local Farming” Masterclass.
Join me at the “Of Durian and Blue Cheese: A Tasting Journey” Live Masterclass with chef Chung Deming of The Quarters and Durian Edition on 22 August to learn the process of harvesting durians from farm to table (sign up here!). Learn fun tips such as what to look for in a durian and the difference in taste between the durian varieties. To top it all off, you will get to learn how to make durian cream – perfect for use in pastries!
Furthermore, you can purchase a tasting box, which includes a durian tasting platter, or a Food Bundle which includes signature durian food items and get it delivered to your doorstep.
On 30 August, join me at “The Wonderful World of Kuehs” Live Masterclass where I will present popular kuehs with Jeremy Nguee of Mrs Kueh and Claire Ariela Shen of Rainbow Lapis (sign up here!). The Live Masterclass will include a demonstration of how you can make “burst in your mouth” ondeh ondeh at home as well as tips on how to get your kuehs in their vibrant colours using only natural ingredients. To top it off, don’t forget to grab their Food Bundle to enjoy with your family!
FOOD BUNDLES
No SFF is complete without feasting. This year, festival-goers can order Food Bundles from Singaporefoodfestival.sg! These Food Bundles will be delivered to your doorstep, and they feature tantalising offerings and dishes that Live Masterclass chefs and presenters will demonstrate in their culinary tutorial sessions. Prepare for an indulgence without stepping out of your home!
Look out for treats such as Damn Easy Hokkien Mee (right) by Chef Ming Tan who will cook from Singapore virtually, alongside Chef Margarita Forés who will join live from the Philippines, or savour a Candlenut Set Meal for 2 pax by Chef Malcom Lee, one of the few Singaporean chefs who has earned a Michelin-star.
VIRTUAL FOOD TOURS
For foodies who love exploring, the Virtual Food Tours will be right up your alley. Join local TV personality, Chua Enlai, and explore the historical Tanjong Pagar/ Chinatown precincts as well as the whimsical Katong/ Joo Chiat precincts. Rediscover stories behind popular eats in the area, tales behind heritage food businesses, and lesser-known food gems.
For example, while Tong Heng is a well-known fixture in Chinatown selling traditional Cantonese pastries, few know that its founder was a former Qing Dynasty security official who came to Singapore in search of a better life.
Sign up for the virtual tour at this link; You can also join in the culinary action by purchasing food items from the tour here!
SFF FOOD MERCHANDISE
To accompany the delectable festival dishes, grab a can of the SFF exclusive beer by Brewerkz – Passion Gao Siew Dai.
