Song Han Carrot Cake – Curry Powder-Infused Carrot Cakes With A Punch
November 27, 2020
There are at least 4 hawkers clanking their woks to fry a flavorsome mix of chopped radish cubes, chye poh (preserved radish) and an ungodly amount of eggs at Tampines Round Market & Food Centre. Evidently, the carrot cake competition is strong here.
But the one stall that consistently stood out with its unceasing long queue (which even wound out of the hawker centre’s premises) is Song Han Carrot Cake located at the outer ring of the centre, and for a spice-y good reason.
Inspired by Singaporeans’ and his own love for curry and a simple good plate of carrot cake, the owner decided to marry the two elements to create a curry-infused carrot cake. The only stall in Singapore to add spices such as curry powder, cumin and turmeric into its radish cubes and homemade chilli, Song Han Carrot Cake just understands our love for all things hiam and spice-y.
The Fried Carrot Cake With Prawn ($3) came with at least 5 pieces of the briny crustacean, lots of eggs, homemade radish cubes and a liberal sprinkling of chye poh – all for that price! The inconsistently-shaped carrot cake slices which were made from scratch the night before were soft and mushier than what we were used to, but delightful nonetheless. We were pleasantly surprised that the earthy spices added were neither pungent nor overpowering. The aromatic spices provided a distinct fragrance to the savory plate, which also carried subtle notes of wok hei.
If you loathe having to choose between black or white carrot cake, you will be very pleased with the Fried Black And White Carrot Cake ($3) which comes with both versions. The best of both worlds!
Coated in a sweet and glossy sauce, the black carrot cake was flavorful with a smoky undertone. When paired with its white counterpart, the carrot cake was exceptionally appetizing with both savory and sweet notes coming together harmoniously. The carrot cake was light and not at all greasy, and we polished off the entire plate effortlessly.
With prices starting from $2, Song Han Carrot Cake offers one of the most affordable and one-of-a-kind carrot cake in Singapore. But please do be patient while waiting for your hiam carrot cake as the stall is helmed by only one middle-aged uncle who does everything from the ordering and frying, to serving and cashiering!
