South Union Park – Neighbourhood Cafe in Kembangan

Opened in March 2016, South Union Park is a café located at the East of Singapore, at Jalan Kembangan Road. Take a short walk away from Kembangan MRT Station and you’ll find yourself before a row of shophouses, surrounded by private residential estates. The minimalistic setting of the café exudes a clean, peaceful environment, great place for a relaxing afternoon meal. The variety of food can be quite limited such that there were only 3 Mains and 3 Pasta dishes, but no doubt, this is just a small 55-seater café.

The Mussels ($18) were a great start for a meal. The South Australian mussels tasted really fresh and juicy with a touch of saltiness. There was also a hint of wine from the chorizo broth which brought out the sweetness of the mussels. Bread was served along with this dish so that you could finish the broth till its very last drop.

The Duck Confit ($19) arrived with a scent of citrus. The freshly made tagliatelle pasta is served with hazelnut cream, sautéed spinach and topped with lemon zest. Unfortunately, the duck tasted a little too strong and overpowered the mild hazelnut cream. On the other hand, the pasta was tender with a silky texture, and totally on a different level as off-the-shelf pastas.

The meal ended with Apple Crumble ($10) as dessert. Unlike the traditional pie, this dessert was recreated where you actually have the whole apple! The stewed apple was soft, moist and full of natural sweetness. Surprisingly, Greek yoghurt was served along with the usual crumbles, vanilla ice-cream and butterscotch. Simply combine all ingredients and enjoy the mouthful of “adventure.”
