Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant @ Craig Road
December 01, 2014
I finally dropped by Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant for lunch last week! Managed by Guan Hoe Soon Group, the oldest Nonya Restaurant in Singapore, they serve pretty affordable Peranakan dishes using secret recipes handed down through the generations.
Complimentary Keropok (Prawn Cracker) was first served with chilli dip at the side.
Whenever I visit any Peranakan restaurant, I would always order a plate of chap chye. The Nonya Chap Chye ($10) here is decent but I’ve had better. The light brown gravy is unremarkable but the vegetables hit the sweet spot between crisp and tender.
Their Nonya Otah Otah ($8) is made using a recipe that is passed down over generations. Using only mackerel, this is a hotplate dish that is as pretty as it is tasty. I love its smoothness and mild spicy fragrance.
What impresses us is the Ayam Buah Keluak ($15) – a labour intensive dish but definitely a staple Peranakan dish. We love the combination of these keluak flesh with minced meat. The rempah was rich and it was cooked for hours to achieve the desired flavour and thickness. Chicken meat was tender and flavourful.
Note that this place is located in Chinatown Plaza (not Chinatown Point). It is along Craig Road, so it is better for you to alight at Tanjong Pagar. I suggest you come for dinner if you want a quieter space, because during lunch time, the restaurant is filled with tour groups.
