STRAY: Shop Front
STRAY

A new cafe – STRAY by FATCAT has landed on the 4th storey of Orchard Central! Yupp, you got it right if you were wondering if FATCAT Ice Cream Bar has expanded into town! Currently, STRAY has yet to launch their full menu and thus, the range of food available is limited. Nevertheless, the design and layout of the cafe is aesthetically-pleasing and minimalistic, which is bound to please the younger crowd.

STRAY: Black Pepper Wagyu Bowl

With just 3 mains on the menu, the Black Pepper Wagyu Bowl ($22, $20 for lunch special) moooo-ed out to us. Cooked to a commendable tenderness, the beef was juicy and flavourful. We certainly looked forward to our favourite activity, which is bursting that sunshine of a yolk onto the fluffy rice ooooohhhh. The harmony of all the flavours, topped with gentle touches of Gari (ginger) espuma, shaped the dish into our favourite of the afternoon.

STRAY: Truffle Fries

Truffle fries is my Achilles’ heel. There, I said it. (Someone please tell me I’m not alone). The STRAY Truffle Fries ($12) remained crisp over time, making it an enjoyable snack. And the best part – it’s not the kind of fries where you feel like you’re not getting your money’s worth because of the lack of potato “liao” inside. One unique point to note is the use of Chinese spices that lent the fries an interesting flavour. While not impressive, this dish is decent if you simply wish to satisfy your cravings.

Sphere desserts are photogenic, attention-grabbing and fascinating. Keep Popping ($12) consists of 3 adorable molecules, just waiting to explode in your mouth. Lime stood out the most, with a refreshing burst of sourness. However, this trio of ballers ultimately failed to score a date with us girls at the table. Oops, but $4 a ball is just too much of a pinch.

STRAY: Black Gold

FATCAT Ice Cream Bar previously shot to fame with their iconic Charcoal Waffles with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce. Riding on their success, these guys are making an appearance here too. Now, with a revolutionary Salted Egg Soft Serve. Although I am a fan of salted egg, I have to admit that I would prefer a good old waffle dessert over this. In addition, the Black & Gold ($18) got us wondering “where is the charcoal??” more times than we could remember.

Honestly, I didn’t really get a clear picture of their concept of redefining Chinese cuisine during my meal. Hmmm, will this kitty grow into a STRAY cat? We think not, but we certainly hope that their upcoming full menu in February will be better. As for now, you can catch their Lunch Special, served with a complimentary coffee or tea, from noon to 3pm
