Sushi Zanmai: A New Japanese Food Haven at i12 Katong (Third Outlet in Singapore!)
December 25, 2024
There’s something special about top quality Japanese food — it’s fresh, flavorful, and always leaves you feeling satisfied. So, when I heard that Sushi Zanmai has opened at i12 Katong, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Known for its authentic Japanese flavours and incredible variety, this place is perfect for anyone who’s craving a good Japanese meal without breaking the bank.
Walking into Sushi Zanmai, I was immediately drawn to the warm, inviting atmosphere. The menu is truly impressive, with over 280 dishes to choose from. Yes, 280! Whether you’re in the mood for sashimi, sushi, hot pots, rice bowls, or appetizers, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
The Gyuniku Tataki ($8.80) was a great way to kickstart our meal. Expect thin slices of tender and flavourful beef served with a tangy sauce that adds just the right kick. It’s a dish that’s simple, but executed to perfection.
For sashimi lovers, the Honmaguro Ohtoro Sashimi (5pcs $22.80) is a must-try. The premium fatty tuna is so fresh that it practically melts in your mouth —pure indulgence. The Salmon Zanmai Sushi Moriawase (8pcs Assorted Salmon Sushi & 1 Salmon Maki – $16.80) was another standout. It’s a platter of beautifully-crafted salmon sushi, perfect for any salmon enthusiast. Every piece was fresh and delicious.
Their Mentai Spider Roll was a winner. A beautifully crafted soft shell crab sushi roll topped with smelt roe, avocado and roasted cod roe. This dish offered the perfect balance of flavors and a satisfying crunch, making it a standout choice.
I also loved their Mini Temaki—the perfect snack. The Negitoro Ikura Mini Temaki ($3.80) is a classic choice, but the Uni Wagyu Mini Temaki ($9.80) took things up a notch. Creamy uni and tender wagyu? What’s not to love?
For something warm, definitely go for the Kani Chawanmushi ($6.80). The silky steamed egg custard topped with crab meat never goes wrong. It’s light, comforting, and always a crowd-pleaser. Another hearty favorite of mine is the Unadon ($12.80), featuring juicy grilled eel coated with a savory-sweet glaze. I also tried the Meat Gyoza, which is a mix of chicken and pork dumplings with a crispy exterior and juicy filling. These are the kind of side dishes that make you want to order a second serving of.
If you can only order one dish here, it has to be the Spicy Karasu Karei Nabe, a bubbling hot pot of spicy broth that’s especially perfect for a rainy day. I have had this multiple times, and it never fails to hit the spot. I also enjoy the Ika Sugatayaki grilled squid which has a beautiful smoky aroma.
Of course, no meal is complete without dessert, and Sushi Zanmai has some sweet treats that are worth a try. I tried the Cheesecake, and Hazelnut & Mocha Cake, both priced at just $3.80. Unbelievable! Pair these with their refreshing Mango Fizz, or if you’re feeling a bit festive, their House Sake (Junmai Ginjo). The sake is part of their Christmas special and is available for just $7.80 from 20–31 December 2024—such a steal!
What I love most about Sushi Zanmai is their commitment to providing top quality Japanese cuisine at affordable prices. Their single-piece sushi pricing is unbeatable, starting at just $0.80 for Tamago Sushi. Even premium options such as Toro Sushi ($4.80) and Uni Sushi ($9.80) are incredibly reasonably-priced. They source their ingredients directly from Japan, so you can be sure that every dish is fresh and delicious.
So if you’re looking for a place to satisfy your Japanese food cravings, Sushi Zanmai at i12 Katong should be at the top of your list. With so many dishes to try, every visit promises a new experience and new discoveries.
Let me know if you head down—I’d love to hear what you enjoyed most!
