Taste Good – Fall Deeper in Love with Salted Egg Yolk Here!
November 21, 2018
When the salted egg yolk craze hit Singapore, almost everyone in the country went crazy over it. Salted egg yolk was everywhere — from bakeries to high-end restaurants. I would say that I was quite over this trend, until I tried the mini-wok salted egg yolk dish that Taste Good has to offer.
Located in a little nook in Sim Lim Square, Taste Good sells a variety of dishes such as Salted Egg Yolk mini-wok dish($5.00), economic beehoon, and fish soup. Taste Good was packed with both locals and tourists, when I was there. Most of them ordered the salted egg yolk dish.
Before my order even arrived, I was greeted by the fragrant scent of salted egg yolk. I could tell that they were very generous with the salted egg yolk sauce as every piece of chicken was coated quite evenly in the glistening salted egg yolk sauce.
After just a bite, I understood why people are so obsessed with it. The chicken was crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. The chilli padi added a spicy kick, which may be a tad too spicy for some, but it complemented the creamy salted egg yolk sauce extremely well. I really loved the robust flavours and I love that the fried batter coating the chicken chunks were not too thick.
I also tried the Spicy Lemongrass Fish mini wok dish ($5.00). I thought that the dish would be extremely spicy because the fish was covered with a blanket of chilli. It sure looked like a killer! Thankfully, the level of spice was pretty tolerable. The taste of lemongrass was rather strong so if you are someone who doesn’t like lemongrass, maybe you’ll like to steer clear of this dish. The fried fish was cooked well, and I liked that it wasn’t hard or dry.
Amongst all the salted egg yolk dishes that I’ve tried so far, this is the one dish that actually made me crave for it, right after I was done. I had the opportunity to speak to Mandy, the lady who runs the stall daily. She mentioned that it is unusual for tourists to actually know of their eatery even before Singaporeans did. But she still appreciates, and is thankful for, each and every one of her customers. A large percentage of her returning patrons are actually students from Lasalle and NAFA.
The stall has been around for 7 years, and the mini-wok was added to the menu because it was a “one-bowl-meal” that’s fuss-free and easy to eat. Mandy mentioned that they are generous with the salted egg yolk sauce because they only want to serve their customers food of great quality. She frequently asks for feedback because she wants to constantly improve, and make sure that the food is up to standard.
It’s hard to find good salted egg yolk dishes, and it’s even harder to find people who always strive to do better. Visit Taste Good, and have a taste of one of the best salted egg yolk dishes in Singapore!
