Teo Heng Porridge Stall – Super Satisfying & Comforting Porridge
October 22, 2018
The weather’s been pretty gloomy of late. Homey comfort food such as soups, stews, and porridge are the most appealing on rainy days. I’m so glad to have discovered Teo Heng Porridge Stall at Hong Lim Food Centre.
I was greeted by an array of food that was presented very neatly upon my arrival at Teo Heng Porridge Stall. I took longer than usual to place my order as I was spoilt for choice. Thank goodness, the aunty was very patient and didn’t rush me. Eventually, I settled with a little of everything because I just had to!
The star of this meal at Teo Heng Porridge Stall was none other than the fish. They serve three types of fish, but the aunty recommended the bai du yu (rabbit fish). It’s smaller than the other two fish, but the serving was perfect as I was alone. The fish was cooked in a huge pot of salted vegetable soup, then served with a generous sprinkling of salted vegetables. It might look plain to you, but it looked immensely appetizing to me.
The fish wasn’t seasoned before it was cooked, but just a mere five minutes of soaking in the salted vegetable soup allowed the flavours of the soup to penetrate the flesh of the fish. The fish was slightly sweet and very tender. Just this and plain porridge, is a perfect meal for me. Moreover, the salted vegetable’s had just the right amount of sweetness and saltiness, which made the entire combination even tastier.
The squid at Teo Heng Porridge Stall deserved a notable mention too. One bite and you’d know that it was skillfully executed. It was soft and easy to chew through. So don’t worry about rubbery squid that’s hard to swallow.
The slightly “lava” centre of the egg was such a treat!
The braised pork and duck meat were tasty, but a little dry. But just pair them with a spoonful of porridge and condiments, and all’s good.
Unlike the typical laksa fish cake, the fish cake here was so delicately soft and bouncy — almost like tofu, but firmer. I dipped it in the chilli and boy, was it good!
Don’t forget to help yourselves to the house-made condiments at Teo Heng Porridge Stall. The chilli sauce and dark red sweet sauce were my favourites.
I paid a total of $10 for my meal at Teo Heng Porridge Stall. I didn’t get the prices of the ingredients as they were quite busy (there isn’t a price list), but I know the fish was $6! Overall, this was a very affordable and hearty meal. Everything is made from scratch, so rest assured that you’re getting fresh and good quality food. The owner, who learnt the ropes from his father, has been selling porridge for the past 32 years. Although inconspicuous, Teo Heng Porridge Stall has garnered a pretty loyal following over the years.
