Noodle soup dishes are the ultimate comfort food for me. It warms the tummy, and soul, and pleases just about anyone. My favourite noodle soup dishes are prawn noodles, beef pho, fishball bee hoon soup and Japanese ramen! What’s yours?

One day, I was craving for noodles. So, I did a quick search and Thaksin Beef Noodle showed up on the search engine. Beef and noodles? How can I say no? Moreover, there were several comments raving about how good the beef noodles were. I wasted no time and headed there the next day. Thaksin Beef Noodle is named after the former Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. How interesting!

Their signature Beef Noodle Soup ($5) features noodles of your choice (yellow noodle/kuay teow/bee hoon), and chunks of beef and beef tripe bathing in a bowl of dark broth. It is then topped with lots of Thai basil and coriander.

The highlight of this dish was the beef. It had little fat, was wonderfully tender, and easy to chew through. The sweet and savoury soup bore subtle herbal hints, which was exactly what I was expecting. It tasted similar to the ones that I tried in Bangkok. A sprinkling of chilli flakes helped to elevate the flavours a little and made it more appetizing.

The beef tripe was chewy, but not rubbery. I’m not a fan of animal offal, but the tripe, which had soaked up the flavours of the broth, was surprisingly tasty.

I liked how generous they were with the springy kuay teow!

I also tried the Beef Fried Rice ($4.50), which was mediocre at best. The portion was massive, but the taste left much to be desired. The few beef slices in the rice were too thin, and the rice could do with more seasoning. I sprinkled some chilli flakes over, and spooned some of the sweet chilli sauce onto the rice to make it tastier.
