The $2.50 Shop – Affordable Yet Tasty Traditional Malay Dishes
November 05, 2024
In the time of 9% GST and rising prices, we are finding it hard to find hawker food priced below $4. So, you can imagine our joy when we found the $2.50 Shop, which sells $2.50 dishes!
The stall is run by Ms Hani Isnin-Racine and her parents. Their reason for maintaining the $2.50 price point? To provide affordable food to the elderly and needy families in the vicinity.
You can find traditional Malay dishes ranging from Mee Rebus and Nasi Rawon, to Assorted Kuehs! I was quite literally spoilt for choice here!
I started with the Nasi Rawon ($2.50) with Paru. It came with a side of Sambal Goreng, a bowl of thick and rich gravy, and spicy sambal belacan. The paru was moist and tender unlike that at most stalls that I’ve visited!
Moving on to their Lontong ($2.50) which had a rich and creamy broth packed with vegetables. I find that the fragrant grated coconut and spicy sambal elevated the robust flavours of the gravy which carried a hint of sweetness from the abundance of vegetables incorporated.
Covered in a smooth and rich gravy, the Mee Rebus ($2.50) ticked all the right boxes for me. The crunchy vegetables, fried shallots, hard boiled egg, and chilli made for a hearty bowl of noodles.
There is also a wide array of Assorted Kuehs ($2 for 4) to choose from. Expect fried items such as Fried Sweet Potato and Goreng Pisang, to Kueh Dadar and Kueh Lopis — are all perfect for an after meal sweet treat.
The portions here were very generous and the taste was impeccable as well! Tasty and affordable food, combined with the heart to give back to the community, The $2,50 Shop is somewhere I will definitely visit again!
