The Burger Coy – New Muslim-Owned Burger Stall in Amoy Street Food Centre!
July 08, 2022
There’s a new burger joint in town! Located within the ever-bustling Amoy Food Street Centre, The Burger Coy is a Muslim-owned stall tucked away in the back. Despite having been only open for about a month, their visually-appealing burgers have drawn huge crowds. There were even many onlookers who curiously approached us to ask about our burgers once they caught a glimpse of our orders!
Iz was initially working in the hotel industry before he decided to step out on his own with culinary skills he had honed in his very own kitchen from the days before he was married. While the hawker life is infamously tough, the 33-year-old chef sees it as “an adventure”.
The main bulk of his key ingredients is prepped the day before such as marinating the beef patties and chicken overnight. All sauces are made in-house, with Iz taking particular pride in his truffle mushroom mix.
What he does is ensure that the mushrooms have cooled before adding in the truffle oil so that the fragrance of the truffle doesn’t dissipate. He also adds butter into the mix to give it even more of a umami boost.
Four types of burgers are available on the menu – The Cheese Burger ($6.50 for single, $9 for double), The Truffle Mushroom Burger ($8.50 for single, $11 for double), The Black Pepper Burger ($7 for single, $9.50 for double) and The Peri-Peri Chicken Burger ($7.50 for single, $10 for double). Each burger comes with a side of fries, which can be upgraded to either cheese fries for $2.50 or truffle fries for $3.50.
One of the most-ordered items amongst the four is the Truffle Mushroom Burger. Sandwiched between two buttered brioche buns, the handmade beef patty was topped with a slice of cheese while still on the grill before being topped with homemade garlic truffle mayo sauce and fresh lettuce.
The highlight was definitely the juicy mushrooms that were beautifully perfumed with the aroma of truffle oil. While the beef patty was a little too well-done, it scored a redemption point in the next burger (but more on that later). I enjoyed the creaminess of the mayo sauce, though I wished that the the taste of garlic was stronger.
The Black Pepper Burger is certainly an interesting choice, and is Iz’s personal take on McDonald’s Prosperity Burger. Generously lathered in his homemade black pepper sauce, this gloriously messy burger gave one heck of a peppery kick that stays with you. The beef patty here was nicely tender! Rounding things off texturally was a pleasant crunch from the sliced onions.
Folks who don’t fancy beef have the option of choosing the Peri-Peri Chicken Burger. Unfortunately, the grilled chicken thigh was a tad dry, and while it had been marinated in Peri-Peri, most of that delicious spicy kick came from the creamy Peri-Peri mayo sauce instead. That said, the sauce was definitely yummy. I would have also preferred a crisp fried version of the chicken instead.
Slightly crisp, the fries were pretty average so I’d recommend going for a little upgrade. From now till 31st July 2022, The Burger Coy is running a special complimentary upgrade of seaweed fries for every burger between 3pm to 7pm. We gave it a try and it got a unanimous thumbs-up so be sure to pop by!
Despite a few little hiccups here and there, The Burger Coy is certainly a promising stall!
