The Canopy Cafe – Get Delicious JB Fried Bee Hoon at Marina Bay Golf Course!
March 27, 2021
When I think of JB San Lou Bee Hoon, the first stall that comes to mind is JB Ah Meng in Geylang. My friend offered to bring me to The Canopy Cafe to check out their JB Fried Bee Hoon.
It is a long drive to the golf club but it is worth it. The menu is extensive, and may be a little messy for first-timers. There were a mix of western, Japanese and zi-char dishes and each dish is priced at about $10. I came for the Johor Fried Bee Hoon, so I naturally went for the zi-char dishes on our day of visit.
In most tahu gorengs which I have eaten, the tower of deep fried golden bean curd is usually doused in a thick satay sauce. What actually goes into the sauce varies from chef to chef. However, the Tahu Goreng ($8.90) here is served with a bright red chilli sauce that is somewhat similar to Thai-style chilli sauce. It’s tangy, slightly sweet but still carries a lovely sambal fragrance. It is served with julienned cucumbers, beansprouts and onions.
The Prawn Paste Fried Chicken Wings ($9.90) were disappointing on our day of visit. They definitely have a sinfully crispy texture, but they lacked the prawn paste aroma. If it was not actually prawn paste chicken, but just fried chicken, it would have passed with flying colours.
JB Fried Bee Hoon ($9.90) is a popular dish here. The rice vermicelli is mixed with squid, prawns and soy sauce and fried till it looks just like a pancake. The exterior was slightly charred but not as crispy as the one at JB Ah Meng. But considering the price and location, I don’t mind coming back here for this. Pull up a spoonful and you will find that the noodles are moist, and leaves a nice aftertaste in your mouth.
We knew the Fried Hokkien Mee ($9.90) was going to be good when it arrived at our table. The wok hei-rich noodles was infused with rich and sweet prawn stock and served with spicy sambal. The noodles were gooey, moist and quite flavourful. The lime added a zing that really brought the dish to the next level. The Penang Char Kway Teow Fried Kway Teow ($9.90) was decent with gentle flavours and noticeable wok hei.
Their lack of service staff was quite obvious as it took a while to get the attention of the waitress and many tables were not cleared during peak hours.
Note that this cafe offers alfresco dining (meaning no air-condition), so it might be a little humid during lunchtime but the fantastic view of the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay made up for it.
