The Curry Wok – Old School Peranakan Food In Bukit Timah!
December 11, 2019
Peranakan food never fails to put a smile on my face. Even though I am not of Peranakan descent, the comforting flavours never fail to remind me of the simple yet delicious food that my mother or grandmother would cook on weekends. When I stepped into The Curry Wok, its quaint atmosphere and friendly service immediately put me at ease.
Located at the Coronation Arcade in Bukit Timah, this restaurant is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city center as well.
As we sat down and had our order taken, I noticed old photos lining the restaurant walls. These photos document the rich history of this family-run business. Teochew Nyonya recipes are passed down from generation to generation, and are constantly refined as they are handed down.
The one dish I was most excited to try was the Ngoh Hiang ($11). Fresh minced pork provides great flavour and texture! This is combined with vegetables such as water chestnuts, which add a surprising bite of crunchiness. The beancurd skin crisps up beautifully when deep-fried, becoming airy and flaky.
The sambal belachan with lime juice and sweet sauce which came with the Ngoh Hiang complemented the dish well. The sambal was fragrant and appetising, while not being overwhelmingly spicy.
One serving of Ngoh Hiang comes with two large rolls, which is approximately ten pieces. This dish is perfect for sharing with loved ones, with everyone sharing in the goodness. Just make sure to diplomatically divide the Ngoh Hiang pieces before tucking in, or someone may get carried away and finish more than their fair share!
Next up was the Beef Rendang ($13). I am often hesitant to order Beef Rendang when I eat out, as the beef tends to be tough and stringy. I was thus extremely pleased when I took my first bite of this Beef Rendang, which was not dry at all.
The beef almost melts in your mouth because of how tender it was. The beef also had the occasional piece of beef fat, which was silky smooth and made this dish even more decadent.
The spice blend was extremely aromatic and fragrant, and also coated the meat well. This dish is a must-have with rice, as you will definitely want to finish every single drop of the curry sauce!
I was also pleased with the Sayur Lodeh ($10), which contained ample amounts of fresh vegetables such as long beans, cabbage, carrots and turnips. These vegetables were combined with spices and coconut milk to make a rich and satisfying vegetable curry that will get even the staunchest anti-vegetable person to enjoy eating their greens.
This dish, combined with the beef rendang, will make everyone you dine with, strongly consider ordering a second serving of rice!
The simple, traditional dishes at The Curry Wok is something I will be back for, especially when I am yearning for some comfort food. Make sure to come here with friends, so that you can try as many dishes as possible!
