The Glass Onion – Affordable Lip-Smacking Grub Near SMU

The Glass Onion is a 3-month-old bistro located in the heart of Bencoolen, near SMU. What’s that sound? Is that the sound of SMU students rejoicing? The Glass Onion serves bar bites, salads, sandwiching, filling brunch fare, and more.  

The Glass Onion opens from 6.30am to 10.30am to provide breakfast for Hotel Mi’s guests. Non-guests are also welcomed for the breakfast buffet. Alternatively, one can grab something from the the a la carte menu, which is available the whole day from 6.30am to 10pm.

We ordered the Zesty Crab Angel Hair ($15) pasta, which seriously lived up to its name. A wonderful zesty flavour shone through the pasta, which elevated the seemingly simple dish . I especially loved that they use the thinner and more delicate angel hair pasta instead of spaghetti. The angel hair pasta was cooked to al dente, and had a nice bite. Tossed with a generous handful of fresh crab meat, garlic, lime and chilli padi, the dish was refreshing and pleasant, and is definitely worth a try. Priced at just $15, it’s a bang for the buck.

Next, we decided to try the Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Burger ($15). While the grilled chicken thigh was relatively tender, I found the burger underwhelming. The toasted bun was pretty hard and dry. The salted egg yolk sauce was a tad confusing as it had a slight sourness. Overall, the burger did not meet our expectations.

However, the Chicken Curry ($8) completely made up for the aforementioned burger. The chicken curry boasted a full-bodied flavour, and was hearty and shiok. It had a delightful rustic taste, and the symphony of spices worked harmoniously together to create a hearty and wonderful flavour profile. The chicken was tender, and can be separated easily with a fork and spoon. In short, the chicken curry was sufficiently spicy, mouthwatering, and extremely delicious. On top of that, it is rare to find a main course priced so affordably at $8, especially in a bistro setting.

If you are looking for a cosy place to catch up with your friends, without breaking the bank, The Glass Onion is a pretty decent option. I would definitely return for the Zesty Angel Hair Crab Pasta!
