The Mad Sailors – Can You Handle Crazy Halal British Food?
February 24, 2018
You don’t have to be a sailor or a mad man to patronize The Mad Sailors, but you do need a voracious appetite for British food! The Mad Sailors is a Muslim-owned eatery that serves up halal British classics. Fun fact! The eatery is actually started by the same people who brought you Afterwit and Working Title. So, if you’re a fervent supporter of these two places, you might want to drop by for a meal!
You must be a nutter if you skip their classic Bangers & Mash ($18) which comes with two garlic and herb beef sausages, mushy peas, fresh slaw, and housemade mash drenched with onion gravy. Each sausage is packed with peppery coarsely-ground meat, which carried a mild smokiness. The sausage tasted slightly gamey, so pair it with the neutral mash and sweet onion gravy. The mushy peas lent a lovely savouriness to the sausage-mash mix as well.
The bangers & mash might do well as a sharing platter for a group of friends, but I reckon it might be insufficient to qualify as a main course. The Cod ($20), on the other hand, will satisfy your growling tummy with its huge portion.
Sadly, the cod was not well-executed. The flesh was chewy and the batter was quite disappointing. The fish does come with a generous serving of fries though.
