The Ugly Cake Shop – 20% of its proceeds goes to charity!
November 11, 2012
More and more people are opening online cupcake shops. I do get email requests once in a while, asking me to try their cupcakes and blog about it. But most of the time, I rejected them because I don’t want to be obligated to do it. I am very picky when it comes to desserts, so if I really don’t like the cupcakes, how do I blog about it? I rather buy the cupcakes myself and blog about it only if I think it is good.
Friend Lisa has also stepped into the cupcake business by setting a online shop called “The Ugly Cake Shop”. Many friends and colleagues have tried it and they have been telling me how nice it is. So I decided to give it a try!
I am writing about it NOT because she is my friend. But is because I feel her cupcakes are tasty and meaningful.
Why so?
1. Lisa does not use artificial colouring, fondant, gum paste or marzipan. While these additions make for beautiful cakes, Lisa believes that the more natural ingredients (and the fewer chemicals) you put in your body the better!
2. 20% of its proceeds to support the meals of undernourished kids in Timor-Leste. It’s for charity! The money will go towards buying meat, eggs and other much-needed protein sources for the kids in Shallom School, a school set up by Brazilian missionaries and supported by Agape Baptist Church. Lisa seeks to raise at least S$150 each month for these kids. Any shortfall will be made up by her.
Here’s the latest addition of The Ugly Cake Shop – Peanut Butter Cupcake Roses! These dark chocolate cupcakes are topped with creamy, peanut butter roses. The savoury peanut butter frosting is a beautiful marriage with the subtly sweet dark chocolate cake.
Price: $3.50 per cupcake for six or more / $3 per cupcake for a dozen of 12 or more
I really love Lisa’s Lemon Drizzle Cake! It is the signature item of The Ugly Cake Shop and it tastes really good. This lovely buttery pound cake is drizzled with sugary lemon juice once it’s out of the oven! It’s unbelievable how heavenly lemon tastes in cakes!
Price: $18 for 2 big loaves (about 19.5cm long, 10 cm wide) OR 5 mini loaves (each slightly bigger than an iPhone 4).

Yup, that’s what I have tried from The Ugly Cake Shop! They recently created a Nutella Valrhona Cake for all chocolate lovers out there. So if you are interested to try out her bakes, visit uglycakeshop.tumblr.com!
