Thong Aik Coffee — Cafe with Kopi, Toast & Thai Food Near Tiong Bahru!

Located near the Tiong Bahru area, Thong Aik Coffee is a homey cafe located at the foot of a HDB block along Indus Road. Serving up traditional Singapore breakfast classics of eggs, toast and coffee, the cafe switches things up with Thai food for lunch and dinner.

For breakfast, I had the classic Kaya Butter Toast ($1.60) and Soft Boiled Eggs ($1.60). The Kaya Butter Toast was nicely toasted, with the kaya not being too sweet. Dunking the toast in the eggs made for a nice combination!

Besides the traditional eggs and toast, Thong Aik Coffee also serves Lu Rou Fan ($3.90) for breakfast. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and the notes of star anise really came through. A standout for me for sure!

Thong Aik Coffee not only serves traditional Nanyang coffee, but also serves specialty coffee. To have the best of both worlds, I ordered a Hazelnut Latte ($4.50) and Teh ($1.40). The latter was slightly too diluted, but the latte was pretty decent, albeit without latte art.

After 11 am, the lunch menu takes the limelight, and a wide selection of classic Thai dishes is made available. I ordered the Basil Minced Pork with Rice ($6). While the dish was nice, there was nothing to shout about.

The Seafood Phad Thai ($7) was quite the star though. The dish had a nice balance of sweetness and wok hei, and savoury notes from the small chunks of fried salted fish. Given its affordable price tag, you might not expect the dish to be packed with ingredients but Thong Aik definitely does not scrimp on their ingredients! The Phad Thai was generously topped with large fresh prawns.

Serving hearty meals at affordable prices, Thong Aik is definitely worth a visit! Be sure to head down early during lunch hours, as it can get crowded!
