Thong Kay Delights – Old-School Singaporean Breakfast at Albert Food Centre!

I fondly remember tucking into a delicious plate of Chee Cheong Fun and Yam Cake at least once a week as I was growing up. It was essentially one of my comfort foods, and I missed it dearly during my time overseas. There used to be a specific stall my family would buy them from when I was young, but unfortunately their standard has dropped in recent years. This has led to me going on a Chee Cheong Fun hunt, and I find myself ordering this dish at almost every hawker centre I go to.

Thong Kay Delights does not make their own Chee Cheong Fun but they do make the other items! According to the menu, the Yam Cake, Glutinous Rice and Pumpkin Cake ($1.50/2 each) are made by them. I was surprised to find out that they also offer a sweet glutinous rice on top of the regular, savoury option. We chose to stick to the classics, and opted for some Yam Cake, Chee Cheong Fun, savoury Glutinous Rice and Peanut Porridge ($1/2).

Although I can’t be sure, I suspect they make their own sweet sauce as well! It was much pinkier and thinner than the regular sweet sauce I’m used to seeing. They also drizzle on some shallot oil for added fragrance which helped add a more savoury note to the dish. While I wasn’t exactly blown away by it, I liked that it wasn’t heavy or cloying.

Similarly, the Yam Cake here was much lighter than the ones I’m used to as well. After trying everything, I would say that their dishes lean towards the lighter side. It’s all garnished and flavoured very simply, but somehow, I kept going back for more. There’s just something about it, perhaps something very homey, that made me reach for it even when I was full.

If you’re looking for some old-school breakfast, I’ll say that you definitely can get a pretty great-tasting one here!
