Three Good Guys – Salted Egg Yolk Mala Xiang Guo!
January 21, 2019
The Three Good Guys is set up by three good guys — Junjie, Alan and Michael. The young and passionate trio presents their take on mala xiang guo. Instead of ma la sauce, the xiang guo is doused with a rich and creamy salted egg yolk sauce. The Three Good Guys offers the Mala Xiang Guo too, should you be craving that instead.
I went through the usual routine of ordering ingredients, almost saying “中辣” at the counter. Thereafter, I received a buzzer, and returned to my seat. Note that waiting times can be slightly longer during peak hours.
I ordered my usual favourites — okra, Taiwan sausage, pork belly, beef, bean curd skin, tau pok and instant mee. The price of your bowl depends on the number of ingredients you pick(Vegetables at $1, Meats at $2, Seafood at $3). My bowl came up to $15, and I topped up 50 cents for a bowl of rice.
Overall, the ingredients were cooked well, each maintaining the integrity that they should have. Each bowl also comes with a complimentary topping of some really delicious fish skin, which goes perfectly with the sauce. The delicious salted egg yolk sauce was savoury and sweet, and incredibly addictive.
Surprisingly, the “jelak–ness” only hit me when I was just about to finish the whole bowl. The chilli and curry leaves sure helped to alleviate the heaviness of the dish. I shall order both the Mala Xiang Guo and Salted Egg Yolk bowl the next time!
Being a hawker is tough, and it’s great that young and inspiring guys like the Three Good Guys are taking on the challenge,
I’m really excited for these guys, because they’re definitely going to go far.
