TOBY’s Kopi Toast Bakery – Journey to the West for Wallet-Friendly Local & Western Fare!
June 08, 2022
Budget hunters, rejoice! If you’re in the west side of Singapore and looking for wallet-friendly fare to fill your bellies, it’s time to make your way down to TOBY’S Kopi Toast Bakery. Formerly known as TOBY’S The Dessert Asylum, this hidden gem not only dishes out fairly large portions of food at affordable prices, they also offer irresistible promos that will cut your bank account even more slack!
Simple yet welcoming, the no-frills eatery offers Western fare such as BBQ Baby Ribs ($19.90), Battered Fish & Chips ($14.90), burgers, pizza and pasta, as well as local inclusions like kopi and toast sets, curry rice and handmade noodles. In fact, their Buddy Meal ($11) comes with two mains of your choice amongst their selection of curry rice and noodles, and two complimentary beverages that are equally refreshing: calamansi or water chestnut.
Hankering for dessert? Check out their Tea Time Special (from $6.90, from 3pm onwards) which comprises a slice of cake such as Orh Nee, Chocolate Nutella and Oreo Obsession, and coffee or tea.
The portion of Pork Cutlet Curry Rice ($6.90) was very filling. The mound of rice was drizzled with curry and black sweet sauce, and accompanied with battered pork chop and a fried egg that beheld a beautifully oozy, golden yolk.
The curry was on the milder side and the black sweet sauce added an interesting touch of flavours to the mix. I did find the rice a tad too mushy for my liking, though.
While the pork cutlet had a pleasantly crispy exterior from the soda biscuit-batter, the meat was unfortunately rather tough on the inside, albeit seasoned well.
Similar to zhajiangmian, the Minced Meat Noodle in Soya Bean Paste ($5.90) features fresh noodles made in-house. Give the pleasantly chewy noods a good toss in the meaty sauce peppered with little kicks of savouriness from the chunks of meat, before diving in. It also comes with a small bowl of soup on the side that tasted rather plain but had two bouncy fishballs bobbing in them.
I also wanted to give their Kaya Toast Set ($3.80) a go and while the toast itself wasn’t as crunchy and toasted as I would have liked, the kaya spread was nice and sweet, making it complement well with the thin slab of butter. No faults at all with the perfectly runny soft-boiled egg as well as the sweet but robust coffee.
While the food at TOBY’s Kopi Toast Bakery wasn’t exactly out of this world, the affordable prices as well as the portions offered are very attractive and well worth what you’re paying for. If you’re ever on a budget when making a journey to the west, you know where to visit!
