Situated in Kampong Glam, Waffle Place is the latest venture by the same folks running Muslim-owned restaurant Roys Et Vous and cafe Pancake Place. Just as its name suggests, the place boasts a menu of all things waffles, and quite an extensive one at that too! Expect a variety of sweet and savoury options that are perfect for brunch and even dinner!

The two-storey waffle house offers intimate seating for pairs on the first floor alongside their open kitchen, and more tables on the second that cater to larger group sizes. A royal blue and gold colour scheme decorates the waffle house’s interior which is jazzed up with whimsical birdcage chairs. Sunny days see guests enjoying themselves out on the alfresco seating area.

If you’re an indecisive person when it comes to food, boy are you in for a ride! Their dessert waffles all come with a tall serving of soft-serve ice-cream along. Choices include Apple Crumble ($14.90), Rocky Road ($14.90) and Mango Tango ($15.90). You can also opt to have your dessert served in a glass cup or cone instead.

There are eight savoury waffles on the menu. Highlights include  Ham & Pimento Cheese ($17.90), Country Fried Steak ($20.90) and even Gochujang Fried Chicken ($13.90) and Takoyaki Croffle ($13.90). Speaking of croffles, they have a separate section for it that’s solely for the sweet-tootheds. Look forward to Thai Tea Tres Leches ($11.90), Strawberry Cheese ($11.90) and Banana Caramel ($11.90).

After waffling over (haha) the many selections I was presented with, I decided on the Ondeh-Ondeh ($12.90) that came topped with cubes of gula melaka jelly, vanilla-flavoured soft serve, toasted desiccated coconut, pandan custard cream and gula melaka syrup on the side.

The flavours were on the gentle side, with a hint of gula melaka from the jelly. The flavours were amplified by the addition of the gula melaka syrup, which also balanced out the thickness of the pandan custard cream.

The waffle itself was quite the enjoyable treat and had all the good elements of how an ideal waffle should be — crispy on the outside but decidedly fluffy on the inside. If you’re craving for a dessert that isn’t excessively sweet, this is not a bad choice to go for.

For my savoury waffle, I decided to give the Har Cheong Gai Chicken ($13.90) a try. This was hands-down my favourite out of everything I had that day. The boneless chicken leg was marinated to a tee, tender to a fault, and nicely fried. I liked how the prawn paste flavouring wasn’t too overwhelming so that it doesn’t overshadow the waffle.

What made the chicken even better was the sriracha maple sauce on the side. While I couldn’t really taste the sweetness of the maple, the spicy hit packed quite a punch. Whew!

On the other hand, the Cinnamon Poached Pear Croffle ($11.90) left me feeling conflicted. The thick cream wasn’t sweet and practically eclipsed the taste of the croffle, to the point where I found myself scraping off as much of it as possible. I also felt that they could have been more heavy-handed with the cinnamon sugar aspect of the dessert.

On the bright side, the croissant-waffle pastry was nice and fluffy with crispy edges all around. The slices of poached pear were also pleasantly tangy and sweet.

A whole realm of choices are available at Waffle Place. They also have a whole range of earl grey blends and sweet milkshake concoctions! While some choices were a miss, I would 100% come back to conquer the rest of the menu.
