It was a casual Saturday breakfast with our foodie friend, Mark. He was raving about this new bakso stall in City Plaza Level 5 which only opens on weekends and invited us to join him for makan there. To be honest, I didn’t think much of it because I am not a fan of bakso and the ones I tried locally were not very memorable. So I brought my baby along and totally forgot about my camera (which I regretted).

Mark said the queue on Sunday can be quite crazy because the Indonesian domestic helpers will all be there to get a taste of home. So we arranged to meet on a Saturday at 10am. The owners were still trying to set up but there were already two groups of Indonesians waiting.

Bakso is Indonesian meatball and is named by CNN as among the 40 best Indonesian dishes. When served with noodles and broth, the dish is mee bakso. When Indonesians refer to bakso, they usually refer to the whole bowl of it — the savoury broth, the smooth fragrance of garlic or shallot oil, the crunchy green choy sum, the slithery vermicelli and above all else, the chunky-meaty-gummy bakso balls.

Each bowl of Bakso Urat ($8) at Waroeng Bakso comes with 3 huge pieces of beef meatballs. They are delicious with the perfect lean meat-to-fat ratio. The meatballs are super soft and thick, with the perfect balance of spices. Besides the beef balls, the bowl also comprises a Taupok filled with beef paste. If you love chilli, go for the Bakso Corona ($10). It is crazy spicy but our friend loves it!

The star of the dish is the very thing that holds everything together — the soup. I had a taste of the original soup before completing it with their chilli sauce and kecap manis for a sweet and spicy zing. The taste of this Bakso was heavenly, even without any additions. I could taste the intense umami that came from bones which had been simmered for a long time. The cloudy soup was so rich in flavour; savoury with a hint of sweetness that lingered in my mouth. This was so different from the Bakso I had at another eatery where the flavours were mellow.

I haven’t been so excited about a place for a long time. For Waroeng Bakso by Hamburguesa, I wanted to pen it down immediately and share it with you guys. If satisfaction has a definition, this Bakso Urat is it. Hope you like it and I will definitely be back for their Bakso very soon.
