Wen Ge Charcoal Delights – Delicious Smoked & Roasted Meats in Bukit Merah View!
November 11, 2021
Situated in the mature estate of Bukit Merah View that’s home to many airy coffee shops, Wen Ge Charcoal Delights is where you can get your fill of roasted meats with rice, noodles or hor fun. If their name seems familiar to you, you might have chanced upon their other branch in Hougang Ave 3.
Don’t be overwhelmed by how large the menu looks; all you have to know is that you can get half or whole roasted duck ($20/38), soya sauce chicken ($7.50/12.80), roasted pork ($22/43), char siew ($22/43) or sausage ($22/43), or meal-sized portions with your choice of carbs.
It seems like the mala trend is an undying one and I was rather curious about the Mala Special Noodle ($4.80), which had the “chef’s recommendation” stamp. This bowl was definitely worth the price as it came with char siew, roasted pork and lup cheong (Chinese sausage) on a hearty portion of egg noodles.
Give the springy noods a good toss to thoroughly coat it in the sweet sauce and mala paste. The texture of the noodles was on point but I didn’t quite get that tongue-numbing sensation, though the spiciness from it did linger for some time. Perhaps it got slightly mellowed out by the sweet sauce? Nonetheless, it was still quite a novel dish to try.
What I liked about the dish is that it gives you sampling portions of some of the more popular roasted meats they have. My favourite was, hands down, the fatty chunks of char siew — each piece more indulgent than the last. The pork was beautifully charred and was dressed in a wonderful sweet-savoury marinade.
The thickly-sliced lup cheong was very meaty and had slight smoky undertones that didn’t overpower the sweetness of the sausages. As for the roasted pork, there was more meat than fat and was saltier than I expected. It created a nice balance when paired with the other ingredients but could be a tad too salty on its own.
The Char Siew Wanton Noodle ($3.50) didn’t differ too much from its mala variation. I’d actually skip it and go for the Mala Special Noodle instead. While the noodles and char siew were as brilliant as ever, the wantons were rather disappointing. The chewy skin was too thick and I wished there was more filling.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Shredded Chicken Hor Fun ($3.50) which was more flavourful than what I was expecting, given that the ones I’ve tried were on the lighter side. Doused in a smoky and slightly spicy sauce, the smooth hor fun made for a nice combination with the tender chicken slices and pork lard pieces.
All dishes are accompanied with a bowl of clear soup, which had herbal notes infused to refresh your palate from the richness of the meats.
There’s a special breakfast promotion for the Char Siew Wanton Noodle and Shredded Chicken Hor Fun($2.50 a bowl from 8am-11am). I wouldn’t mind getting the latter again but I’ll recommend that you go for the char siew and lup cheong!
