If you’re up for a little adventure, I’ve got a hidden gem for you! Last week, I ventured out to Woodlands for breakfast to try Wen Wen Chee Cheong Fun 稳稳吃肠粉. A little off the beaten path, it’s about an 8 to 10-minute walk from Woodlands MRT, tucked away in an unassuming coffeeshop. But, trust me, the walk is totally worth it.

This place isn’t your ordinary chee cheong fun stall. It’s run by two brothers from Malaysia – 27-year-old Loi Wen Yik, a former engineer, and his younger brother, 24-year-old Loi Wen Soon, who used to work as an assistant in an omakase restaurant. Their stall is a tribute to the flavors they grew up with in Ipoh, and they’re passionate about sharing those tastes with us in Singapore.

So, why the name “Wen Wen”? Turns out, all the brothers share the middle name “Wen,” which inspired the playful name for their stall. They’ve brought the Ipoh style of chee cheong fun here, where you can mix and match your meal with meat-stuffed yong tau foo, paired with smooth, silky chee cheong fun and a sauce of your choice. Everything – from the ingredients to the chee cheong fun – is priced at 90 cents each, making it super affordable.

The brothers are meticulous with their ingredients. They make their yong tau foo from scratch, stuffing tofu, red chilli, bitter gourd, and more with a flavorful meat filling, then steaming it to perfection before a quick deep fry to add that extra bit of crispiness. It’s honestly one of the best I’ve had, with each piece so tender and juicy.

And now, let’s talk about the sauces. You absolutely must pair the chee cheong fun with their curry sauce – it’s thick, spicy, and adds a beautiful richness to each bite. The chee cheong fun itself is smooth yet firm, topped generously with curry and sprinkled with sesame seeds. For those who want an extra flavour boost, go for the curry and red sauce combo. The sweetness from the red sauce perfectly balances out the heat from the curry, creating a rainbow of flavours that’s absolutely delicious.

Besides chee cheong fun, they also serve up some tasty char kway teow and oyster omelette. Next time, I’ll definitely go back to try those too!

If you’re looking for a filling breakfast that’s unique and packed with flavour, I’d highly recommend giving Wen Wen Chee Cheong Fun a try. It’s heartwarming to see young entrepreneurs bringing a taste of home to Singapore, and I’m so happy to support them. Will definitely be back!
