Xie Jia Chinese Prata – Curry Chicken With Prata and French Toast in Jurong East
August 07, 2022
When we think of Prata, I’m pretty sure the same few shops come to mind — R.K. Eating House, Springleaf Prata, Mr & Mrs Mohgan’s Prata etc. But a shop selling Chinese Prata in Jurong East? Perhaps only those living in the area would be familiar with it.
The owner of Xie Jia Chinese Prata has decided to continue selling Chinese Prata on his own in Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre when his relatives retired. But don’t be mistaken, the Prata you get here is not anything like Scallion Pancakes, also known as ‘Cong You Bing’. Rather, it is the same type of prata that we can commonly find in Singapore.
Their Plain Prata goes for $1.20 a piece and their Egg Prata for $1.80. Those who like their Prata ‘zhng-ed’ up, they also have Onion with Egg ($2.50) and a Cheese Prata ($3). Tearing through my plain piece, I thought it lacked the crispiness I expect, and it fell more on the doughier side of things. It was nonetheless really yummy when paired with the side of curry!
I managed to snag the second last bowl of Curry Chicken ($5.50) when I got there at 12 noon and I was pleasantly surprised by how big a bowl it was. Inside, I found a whole chicken thigh that had been cut up into bite-sized pieces and a huge half of a potato.
Going straight for a taste of the gravy, I was first greeted by a kick of spice that tingled my tongue. This was followed by a soothing milky-coconut aftertaste which helped to tone down the spice packed in the thin curry. The chicken was tender for the most part except for some portions where the meat got a little stringy and dry. That could be easily fixed with a spoonful of curry!
The potato was soft, and the gravy had made its way through the chunk.
I dipped my Egg Prata in the Curry Chicken and it was a match made in heaven. Having had the curry on its own, the spice lingered on my tongue. However, the egg prata took that away, which made the entire experience a much more enjoyable one.
Another item that took me by surprise was the Plain French Toast ($2.50). Other variations include an Egg French Toast ($3) and one with Cheese ($3.50). Crisp on the outside, warm and slightly chewy on the inside, the French toast went hand-in-hand with the curry as well. This reminded me of having my Curry Chicken with a baguette, only better.
Besides these, Xie Jia Chinese Prata also serves up Lontong ($3.50) and Curry Chicken Noodles ($4.50). They’re open from as early as 5.30am daily but closes at 12.30pm, so be sure to get there early!
