A stone’s throw away from Clementi Market, Xin Peng La Mian Xiao Long Bao sells traditional Chinese dumplings and noodles at affordable prices. The stall is no stranger to long snaking queues of loyal customers, so I decided to see what the hype was about!

To fill the stomach, I had the Dry Preserved Vegetable Shredded Meat La Mian ($3.50). At first glance, Xin Peng La Mian XLB definitely does not skimp on the ingredients. At such affordable prices, the portions were very large even for my big appetite! Taste-wise, the preserved vegetables added a nice saltiness without being too overpowering, and the noodles were not overcooked.

For mala lovers, the Spicy Shredded Chicken La Mian ($4) has the same large portion, and brought a taste of Sichuan to my tastebuds. I expected the chicken to be dry, but its tenderness came as a surprise. However, the dish was not flavourful as I had hoped. Despite its prominent red hue, the soup was too diluted.

To go with the La Mian, I had the classic Xiao Long Bao ($6). The large XLBs were stuffed generously with minced pork filling. I have always believed that the soup that oozes out of any XLB is the most important component of it, and I’m happy to report that the stall’s rendition did not disappoint. The clear broth was rich and flavourful, and can be elevated with a gentle splash of vinegar. My only gripe was that the skin was a tad too thick.

Saving the best for last, the Red Oil Wanton ($4/6) was a standout for sure. The wantons with the chilli oil was delicious, and the hint of vinegar in the sauce added a nice tartness. I could even consume the chilli oil on its own! I would say go for the smaller portion, as one plate alone would already be very filling.

With its large portions, and affordable price tags, I can see why Xin Peng La Mian Xiao Long Bao is a crowd favourite. For those with a huge appetite but don’t want to break the bank, this place is for you! Would definitely come back for the Red Oil Wanton again, that chilli oil is really something else!
