Yen Ju Yong Tau Foo – Simple, Fuss-Free Yong Tau Foo Hidden in Tampines
June 13, 2022
Tucked away in a quiet kopitiam in Tampines, Yen Ju Yong Tau Foo comforts bellies and souls with heart-warming bowls of yong tau foo that have a homey touch to them. Simple and fuss-free, the no-frills ytf here is the perfect meal for a cold, rainy day, or an effortless breakfast and lunch that is easy on the stomach.
The unassuming stall has been running for five years and is manned by a very friendly auntie who does the prepping, cooking and serving all by herself. Occasionally, her husband would pop by to lend her a hand.
Just like your typical yong tau foo stall, you can select your choice of ingredients and opt for them to be served in a steaming bowl of soup or deep-fried and drizzled with the stall owner’s special bean paste gravy, which she is particularly proud of. You can also top up $0.50 for rice or noodles to go with your yong tau foo.
The noodles came doused in a sticky gravy that clung to every strand after a thorough toss. It was surprisingly light on the palate and overall had a good bite.
For the main bulk of my yong tau foo, I picked out a few perennial ingredients such as meat-stuffed eggplant, tau pok (dried beancurd puff), tofu and ngoh hiang. My meal summed up to $5.20, including the noodles and bowl of soup, which makes it pretty affordable.
The sauce was very flavourful, and most of the ingredients had successfully soaked up the savoury-sweetness of the gravy — the eggplant which was well-cooked and not too bitter, and the plump beancurd, especially. The stuffed tau pok was fried to a crisp but my only gripe was that it was too dry on the inside.
The ngoh hiang was very meaty and delivered a hit of five-spice powder when bitten into. Dip it into the house-made combination of spicy chilli paste and sweet sauce and you’ve got a classic flavour pairing going on there.
For those who prefer a soupy yong tau foo meal, the broth was light yet refreshing and flavourful with slightly sweet notes. The QQ fishballs were on the slightly larger side and delightfully bouncy.
It very much reminded me of the food my grandma enjoys cooking and a distinct home-cooked quality definitely shines through. Do pop by Yen Ju Yong Tau Foo to show your support!
