Yuen Kee Chicken Rice @ Johor Bahru
April 05, 2015
Our second stop for JB Makan Trail landed at Yuen Kee Chicken Rice (源记鸡饭). Located in Kedai Kopi Yee Chia Ler, it is a humble, no-fuss chicken rice stall but it is well worth your effort to track it down to try their special fried chicken, as evident in the rows of golden roasted chickens displayed at the counter.
I went to ask the stall owners about why their fried chicken was so delicious. The lady boss Mrs Kang shared that they first blanch the chicken, air dry, roast the chicken over charcoal before deep-frying the chicken to crisp the skin. So many steps!
The meat is so tender and sweet because Mrs Kang said they only pick about 1.7 to 1.8kg for roast chicken, if the size is too big the meat will be tougher. With the additional efforts they took to roast the chicken before deep-frying, No wonder their fried chicken tasted so juicy with crispy skin! Half a chicken costs RM$17.
What goes well with their roast chicken is the chilli sauce which has a tangy hint at the beginning and the spiciness only kicks in at the end. But it was short-lasting, and very addictive. You just want to keep dipping the chicken with the sauce. The long grain rice were had a mild garlic and ginger aroma, and not overly greasy. Each grains were firm to the bite and not mushy.
