Yun Heng Authentic Ipoh Shredded Chicken Hor Fun – Little-Known Eatery Hidden in Lucky Plaza
October 12, 2021
Hidden deep within the many shops in Lucky Plaza, Yun Heng Authentic Ipoh Shredded Chicken Hor Fun is a humble little eatery serving home-cooked Ipoh-style meals. Run by a former waitress in one of the top sushi restaurants in Singapore, Ipoh-born chef Amber focuses on creating flavourful dishes that don’t use pork or MSG.
The streamlined menu offers either hor fun or bee hoon, when it comes to carbs, and they can be paired with Homemade Wanton Soup ($4.80 for regular, $5.80 for large) or Teochew Meatball Soup ($$4.80 for regular, $5.80 for large). You can also choose to enjoy them without the carbs! There’s even simple desserts such as Homemade Barley Gingko with Dried Beancurd ($2.50) and Homemade Sea Coconut and Longan ($2.50).
If the dish is mentioned in the name of the stall, of course it’s something I have to try. The Signature Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun Soup ($6 for regular, $8 for large) is made with a soup stock that’s boiled with chicken and it had pronounced yet delicate flavours that were gentle on the palate and tummy. While I could see spots of chilli oil on top of the broth, I couldn’t really taste much of it.
The hor fun was silky and smooth, making it easy to slurp up with the soup. The shredded chicken was nicely boiled and very tender. It would have been nice if the prawns were fresh because you can taste that these ones were of the frozen kind.
The simple bowl of Teochew Meatball Soup ($4) used the same broth as the Signature Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun Soup, but probably had additional seasoning as it was a lot more flavourful and slightly sweet. I really enjoyed the Teochew meatballs that had a bit of a springy texture. You can taste the chillis mixed into each meaty morsel that had hints of onion and bits of meat wedged in the centre.
I also had the Homemade Spicy Beehoon ($5 for regular, $6 for large), a simple arrangement of bee hoon tossed in a spicy sauce, Teochew meatballs topped with caramelised onion chilli, fishcake slices, cabbage and spring onions.
It might come off looking a tad on the dry side but the soft, delicate strands of bee hoon were anything but. They were tossed in a homemade chilli sauce that had hints of lemongrass, making it quite addictive. There was a bit of spicy kick but it wasn’t as long-lasting as I would have liked it to be. But then again, I love spicy food so it’s just my personal preference.
A lot of the flavours in the dishes here are on the lighter side but they still come through, thanks to Amber’s careful use of seasoning and ingredients. Drop by Lucky Plaza if you’re after a nice, home-cooked meal!
