Zheng Xing Desserts – Famous Tau Suan Stall Opens Second Outlet in Bukit Timah

Those who have been following me for years will know that I am a big fan of Zheng Xing Mei Shi’s tau suan. Our office used to be near Albert Centre and I would always head there for breakfast before work. But the annoying thing is, this stall only opens three days a week.

Here’s the happy news – they have opened a new outlet in Beauty World Food Centre. And they are only closed every Wednesday. Yay!

Second-generation owner, Mingyi, has been helping out at his father’s stall since he was young. Together with his friends, they have opened a second outlet in Beauty World. His friends will do most of the cooking in the new outlet while Mingyi still helps out in his parent’s stall in Albert Centre on their opening days.

Dessert lovers will definitely know this stall as they sell only 4 types of dessert – Tau Suan (mung bean soup), green bean with sago and coconut cream, Bubur Terigu (wheat porridge), Bubur Pulut Hitam (black glutinous rice porridge).

Their Bubur Pulut Hitam is thick, full-bodied and creamy. They add a generous dollop of coconut milk, which lends an extra aroma to the rice. They have also added dried longan which gives a pleasant sweetness. The Bubur Terigu and Green Bean Soup are both cooked in coconut cream, which makes the desserts thick and creamy. They have reduced the sweetness but I wish it was sweeter because desserts are meant to be sweet.

Tau suan brings back sweet memories of my childhood when my aunt used to always make them on weekends. Zheng Xin’s tau suan has a good consistency — it is not too starchy nor diluted. The beans are nicely steamed beforehand and aren’t mushy or overdone. Every spoonful has a lavish amount of firm mung beans. They toast the you tiao in the stall. The savoury and crispy pieces complement the sticky sweet texture of the tau suan. Each bowl of dessert costs $1.80.
