Today’s vegetarian food is not just “rabbit food” but it has become complex and flavorful. Just a few days ago, my vegetarian friend recommended us to Zen Japanese Vegetarian Restaurant. It is not the same as the zen temple food but some local japanese cuisne in vegetarian version.
Oh by the way, there is no alcohol, no eggs, no onion and no garlic in the menu.
Buck Wheat Noodles ($9) plays a major role in the cuisines of Japan as soba and the noodles are soaked in a flavourful Japanese soup stock with golden mushrooms and vegetables.
Assorted Skewer 6 Kinds ($12) comes with Mushroom Shiitake, Cherry Tomato, Japanese Sweet Corn, Japanese Asparagus, Veg Chicken and Lady finger. Veg Chicken is a soy product with subtle and fibrous texture that has a taste profile of chicken. It was grilled with teriyaki sauce.
This is Bean Curd with Nattou ($6). The friend said to me:”This is very good for digestion because it is already halfway there!” Weird, we used to like nattou (fermented soy bean) when we were still babies, but now, it has become an adventurous thing to try.
The restaurant follows a contemporary modern zen style with a open kitchen concept. It was very affordable because they don’t charge service change and GST. They will be moving to a larger space in Balestier after Chinese New Year next year.
